RFID In Manufacturing

In the current wave of smart manufacturing, how companies can enhance production efficiency, optimize management processes, and ensure product quality through technological innovation has become a focal point of industry attention. TEBEI Electric Co., Ltd., as a national-level high-tech enterprise group and a major Chinese energy equipment manufacturing company, has successfully blazed a new trail in smart manufacturing through the application of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology in its sheet metal workshop.

The sheet metal workshop is primarily responsible for producing high-efficiency finned heat sinks for transformers, ensuring their safe, stable, and long-term operation. However, under traditional management models, the workshop faced challenges such as low reporting efficiency, high error rates, and the inability to implement product traceability management. These issues not only impacted production efficiency but also hindered further improvements in product quality.

To overcome these bottlenecks, TEBEI Electric's Plate and Fin Workshop introduced RFID in manufacturing, assigning a “digital ID” to each work order product. RFID technology, with its ability to operate in harsh environments, long reading distances, high speed, and large data capacity, emerged as the ideal solution to the workshop's management challenges.

Since the RFID project was launched in October 2024, the sheet metal workshop has installed RFID high-frequency readers at 36 workstations in critical processes such as assembly, sheet metal welding, flange welding, sandblasting, slag removal, leak testing, and painting, achieving intelligent management through automatic data collection, automatic work order reporting, and full-process product traceability. This transformation has not only significantly improved operational efficiency, achieving 100% accuracy in data collection, but also increased the scanning-based work reporting rate from 90% to over 99%, and the timely reporting rate from 82.8% to 96.5%.

With the support of RFID technology, the sheet metal workshop has achieved transparency in production processes, refined management, and traceability of quality. Employees use RFID tags to scan and report work, and the system can record production and inspection information in real time. Through a mobile app, employees and management can query detailed information about individual products at any time. Additionally, leak test records are now registered via mobile scanning, and the system can automatically identify products that have not undergone leak testing, perform leak point statistics, and send real-time notifications to relevant personnel, significantly improving work efficiency and product quality.

Furthermore, the application of RFID technology provides accurate data support for employee performance management. By leveraging production data recorded via RFID tags, the company can accurately reflect each employee's production performance, enabling fairer and more reasonable evaluations and incentives.

The application of RFID technology in the sheet metal workshop has not only brought significant production benefits and management improvements to the company itself but has also provided valuable experience and insights for the intelligent manufacturing transformation of the entire manufacturing industry. In the future, with the continuous development and improvement of RFID technology, its application in the field of intelligent manufacturing is expected to become more widespread and in-depth, creating greater value for enterprises.
