RFID Medical Tracking

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is an emerging high-tech innovation that has revolutionized automatic identification, surpassing traditional barcodes. As a core component of RFID Medical Tracking systems, it leverages the penetrating properties of radio waves, long-distance transmission, and high-speed data exchange to enable seamless, protocol-driven identification of tagged items. This breakthrough ensures real-time, contactless monitoring—critical for applications like medical waste management, where precision and traceability are paramount.

Medical waste is waste that is directly or indirectly infectious, toxic and otherwise harmful, generated by medical and health institutions in medical, preventive, health care and other related activities. Medical waste contains a large number of pathogenic microorganisms and chemical agents, and has dangerous characteristics such as spatial transmission, acute transmission and latent transmission. The harm of its viruses and bacteria is dozens or even thousands of times that of ordinary urban domestic waste.

At present, the domestic medical waste management system is very imperfect, and the environmental pollution problem of medical waste has not been controlled from the source. The amount of medical waste generated in my country reaches millions of tons each year, but the centralized disposal rate is only 10%, and there is no full supervision of the collection, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal of medical waste during the management process. A large amount of data and information is collected manually, and paper records are used, which are not easy to preserve, easy to be damaged and lost, and difficult to query. The quality and efficiency of work are completely dependent on people's experience and sense of responsibility. The management quality cannot be guaranteed, which leads to the mixing of medical waste with domestic waste or domestic waste with medical waste. It happens from time to time, causing secondary pollution and seriously threatening people's health. Once the virus flows into society with the waste, it will bring great threats to social stability and human health.

The traditional supervision model has been difficult to meet the supervision requirements. Medical waste accidents caused by human unintentional or intentional omissions have occurred from time to time. Such incidents that have occurred across the country have been constantly ringing the alarm bell for us. It is of great significance to explore a new medical waste supervision system to achieve safer and more efficient supervision of medical waste.

Project Content

RFID wireless radio frequency identification technology is an emerging high-tech technology that has caused a revolution in the field of automatic identification after barcodes. It uses the penetrability of radio electromagnetic waves, the characteristics of long-distance transmission and high-speed data exchange, and realizes the technology of automatic identification of identified items through specific protocols. In the identification of target objects, compared with the currently widely used barcode technology, RFID technology has essential advantages: wireless long-distance reading and writing, penetrating reading and writing, reading and writing at high speed, storing more data, and can be used in harsh environments. Therefore, RFID technology has completely subverted the traditional management model in many automatic identification fields.

Through the study of the medical waste management process, with RFID technology as the core, a new medical waste management system based on RFID technology is constructed to supervise the collection, transportation and destruction of medical waste throughout the process, eliminate possible loopholes, and effectively prevent the spread of various viruses and other pathogenic bacteria during the collection, transportation and destruction of medical waste. The pollution pathways realize the tracking and intelligent management of the entire process of medical waste from collection and transportation to sorting, utilization, treatment and disposal. At the same time, the intensity of statistical work on waste flow management is reduced, the scientificity and preparation of statistical data are improved, and the medical waste management work is further standardized and informationized, and the supervision level of medical waste is improved.

System Design

The RFID tag is uniquely bound to the trash can containing medical waste. In the medical waste room, the waste information in the trash can is associated with the tag information and uploaded to the background system. When the waste arrives at the incineration center, the waste information obtained again is compared with the information in the system, and the incineration treatment is carried out if it is confirmed to be correct, otherwise an alarm will be issued.

The overall design framework of the system is as follows:

Medical waste room

The medical waste room completes the binding of RFID tags to the trash cans containing medical waste, and after the waste is weighed, the weighing information is written into the electronic tag.

The trash can with the electronic tag installed will be weighed together with the medical waste. When the RFID reader reads the electronic tag information of the trash can, it obtains the weight of the medical waste from the weighing system and writes the weight information into the electronic tag.

Incineration Center

In the incineration center, the trash cans containing medical waste are placed on the conveyor belt. When they reach the weighing position, the trash can tags are read by RFID, and they are weighed again and the data is sent back to the background management system. The management system compares the obtained weight information with the important information stored in the trash can electronic tag. If it is correct, the subsequent incineration operation will be carried out. Otherwise, an alarm will be issued to prompt the staff to handle it.

System Process

The RFID medical waste management system consists of an intelligent integrated RFID reader/writer, weight collection equipment, display system, sound and light prompt system, server, information transmission system, etc. The specific operation process is as follows:

1. When the collection personnel arrive at the medical waste collection and transportation point, the person in charge of the hospital's medical waste will first present the legally authorized electronic tag, open the collection and transportation handover electronic flow, and record the time, location, and personnel information, and upload it to the control center server at the same time to achieve electronic records.

2. The person in charge of the collection and transportation party issues a legally authorized electronic tag, records the time, location, and personnel information, and uploads it to the server at the same time. After the server successfully matches and records, the system automatically starts the electronic flow of collection and transportation to complete the electronic handover of medical waste. The whole process is completed within 1 second.

3. Weigh each barrel of medical waste, and write the information of the person in charge of the handover, time, location, and weight information to the electronic tag through RFID technology, and upload it to the server for filing.

4. After the medical waste is transported and distributed, it arrives at the incineration center. The RFID system reads the tag information and automatically compares the information. The comparison results are uploaded to the monitoring room of the incineration center, and the comparison failure information is alarmed.
